A question about connection speed

  ponytail 10:10 24 Jan 2019

I am just curious about the speed on my laptop when I connect it to the router with a ethernet cable it is very quick but when I use it wirelessly it is a lot slower.I know that using it wirelessly will be slower but it is a lot slower than I thought it would.Does the laptop need checking.

How do we respond without you giving actual figures. How fast is fast, how slow is slow, what distance from the router, What band is the WiFi/laptop operating in.

Have you actually measured the speed?

The following are the speed readings the first three were done wirelessly the second three were done wired and not sure why there is such a big difference. When you say what band WiFi/Laptop operating in what does that mean. Download 12.74 Upload 1.50 Download 30.05 Upload 0.69 Download 6.18 Upload 0.74

Download 35.10 Upload 9.28 Download 35.77 Upload 9.20 Download 35.78 Upload 9.25 The three wired checks were very consistent The laptop is in a upstairs room directly above the router. No more than about 10 Meters

wireless speed is dependant on 1st what your router will give out, and which band your using 2.4 or 5ghz - how many people are using the same channel - distance from router and what type of material the signal is passing through.

When I did the speed test I was the only one using the internet and there are only the two of us anyway. There is only the wooden floor between the laptop and the router. How do I tell what band I am using.I am thinking of getting some pass through power adapters as I have been thinking for some time of getting some.

I have just been onto the Plusnet live chat support and the router is dual band and is currently set for the 2.4 Ghtz band. They have sent me a email with instructions on how to change the band but it seems very complicated to me

I found the following on Google click here answer three which I tried I cannot see how to choose 5Ghtz as there is no tab. Also looked at answer four
