Processor problems

I have an AMD XP 2600+ running on an ASUS A7V8X motherboard.

I have just received the system and it was set up to run at just 1667mhz (I was told this was an error on the part of the supplier, Carrera). I was told to adjust the clock time on the BIOS to the correct speed. However, the machine is now unstable.

My only thoughts are that it is either the wrong processor which I am being asked to overclock or the motherboard does not support this speed of processor (Carrera denies both points).

Does anybody have any other ideas?

Yes - tell them it doesn't work correctly, and ask them to fix it under warranty.
