Problem with drivers

  KJ823 21:55 02 Nov 2006

I recently needed to install Windows 98 on a friends PC that had previously been running XP and you guys kindly helped explaining where I could download a startup disc.

I have reloaded 98 now but had a problem with drivers. When I started up Windows Plug and Play found the following hardware:

PCI Universal Serial Bus
PCI System Management Bus
PCI Multimedia Audio Device
PCI Card
PCI Ethernet Controller

but was unable to locate drivers and of course I don’t have any discs.

The problem I have is that I cannot change the screen settings and only have 16 colours and I can only have the screen at something like 800x640. I have some software to load for my friend that needs 256 colours so will not run.

Please can someone tell me what I need to do [and idiot terms would be appreciated!].

The PC I am talking about does not have internet access. Can I use one of your links to download something to CD that I can then transfer to the other PC would you know?

Hi, you may be able to download SIW, put the download on CD, then transfer the download and run the Install on the other computer - I think!

but with driverguide you need to be online.

Siw is a standalone program and will transfer easily

The drivers can be downloaded and saved to disk burnt to CD or put on a flash drive and transfered and installed on the 98 machine.

Hello again, sorry to be a pest!
I downloaded the SIW software but not really sure exactly what to look for! When I look at one the things that I have a problem with [yellow explanation mark in Device Manager]
the info I get is:

Cababilities: 14 00 00 00
Configuration Flags 40 00 00 00
Class Unknown
Hardward IDs PCE\VEN_8086DEV_24CDSUBSYS_90161509REV_01
Compatibile IDs PCI\VEN_8086DEV_24CDREV_01
Description PCI Universal Serial Bus

Is any of this meaningful to anyone? I presume I need to download a driver to make it work but I don't know how to tell which driver I need.
Sorry to be so dense
