Problem booting Windows ME

Hi all.

I have been given a task to attempt to fix a mate's PC. He has Win ME installed on an Athlon 1800 system, Gigabyte MoBo. All has been OK until recently. On boot, Windows proceeds to load, then once the desktop starts to load he gets a BSOD with the message that there has been a problem with vmm(12).vxd

Any ideas what this error means, and if there's any way of fixing it short of formatting?

He has no ME startup disk, but there is a Win 98 one. Would using the scanreg utility help in this case, and if so how can I access it with no DOS access in the ME boot process?

Any and all ideas appreciated

Go to Google for info on this matter or try installing your OS without any format, this problem

The xxd is a virtual device driver - have they added or removed anything recently?

Can you get into Safe Mode and run System Restore?

If not I would suggest going into the BIOS and changing the first boot device to CD. Then boot with the Win ME disk in the drive and do an over the top installation.
