Problem accessing shares in XP Pro SP1

trying to setup 2 XP Pro SP1 boxes through a 100MB Switch.

PC (a) is my main PC which connects through a dial-up to the net and is connected to PC (b) through switch.

PC (b) is also connected through the switch.

Getting intermittant access to shares, and a permanent ping from PC (a) 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 to PC (b) 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0, g/w 192.168.0.1, and can ping from PC (b) to PC (a).

If I do a ping 127.0.0.1 (localhost) on each PC, but, PC (a) if giving intermittant replies, PC (b) is fine whenever i ping it.

Is the NIC that fails the localhost ping faulty or have i made a mess of the share permissions (simple sharing disabled to get users and groups, both usernames with password on each PC, tried uninstalling firewalls and enabling netbios over tcp/ip, also tried enabling ipx)

This is usually hassle free on 2K boxes...

any sugestions greatly appreciated...
