I am trying to get an old P/C working and keep getting this error message on start up. I have no idea what it means or if It can be fixed, any ideas ?.

It means that there is a problem with the hard drive. Which version of Windows does it have?

may be faulty ribbon cable to the drive. Also if you are Win98 type at the DOS prompt SCANDISK and run the program

If it-s an old PC that *doesn-t work*, then its probably the drive - but as woody says, try a different cable forst.

With this message you won-t be getting far enough to run any tests though.

Thanks for the replies, its running win 95 I have just changed the cable and then the hard drive but still the same message. When I press the F1 key as prompted message reads boot disk failure. I guess both error messages are linked to the hard drive is that correct?.

PS Check BIOS for LBA enabled, before you throw them away

You could try booting with a 98 boot floppy and see (if you get that far) what you get from typing ...... dir c:

Assumimg the BIOS acknowledges a HD to be present, then a 'file not found' error would be one more nail in the HD coffin.
