primary hard disk fail

My computer increasingly gives the above error message. Usually a couple of reboots got it working but now it's taking many more. I've run various diagnostic tools (XP and System Suite ones) but they haven't cured the problem. Am I right in assuming the above error message really does mean a physical and total failure of the hd is imminent and I should replace it immediately?

Download hard drive manufacturers diagnostic software and run it,before doing so I would back up anything you cannot afford to lose

I downloaded and ran Fujitsu's diagnostic tool as you suggested. It said 'Warning! No hard disk drive has been identified' Hmmm, puzzling to say the least! Among the causes (apart from loose cables) it suggests a 'faulty hard disk'. I suppose it will have to go.

Did chkdsk come up with any errors at all.
