Preventing IE6 launch at start up

In the last day or two, IE6 has taken it into it's head to launch itself every time I start my system up. I'm using MSWinXP/Home. As soon as the desktop appears, IE6 opens TWO home pages then presents the dial-up box. I've hunted through Internet options et al but can't find anything. I've scanned PC Advisors on-line archive, without turning up anything.

Please help me - one of you clever xxxxxx's out there . . .

Obviously, something is trying to dial out. If you have not explicitly enabled any program to do so (such as Windows Update), then I would suspect some sort of 'spyware' or, less likely, a virus.

Download and run a program called Ad-Aware from click here - this will check for any unexpected programs, and remove them.

Do make sure that your anti-virus definitions are up to date, and perform a full system scan, if the problem persists after running Ad-Aware.

You may also find it useful to install a firewall such as the free one from Sygate at click here - this will at least tell you which program is trying to 'phone home', and it's intended destination.

Thanks jazzypop - using Norton 2002 AV, with last Wednesday's signatures. Also Zonealarm.

I ran AdAware which I/D'd and isolated 3 files. Doesn't solve the problem though.

I let it log on, and ZoneAlarm stopped an attempt to logon to 'destination IP:80.249.96.41:HTTP'.

Anyone recognise it?

Thanks VoG - I'll chase them up.

Problem resolved. Latest copy of PCAdvisor arrived today. Cover disc contains freeware called 'Regcleaner.'
Regcleaner listed two entries in startup list, both for 'iexplore services.'
Removing these has solved the problem.
Thanks for responses - and thanks PCAdvisor for 'Regcleaner.'
