possible virus

On start up, my friend's computers active desktop does not open and the computer runs very slowly. Eventually a message apears that there is not enough memory. We think he's picked up a virus (he had no virus protection). He has since bought an anti-virus program but cannot get it to start (the computer says there's not enough memory).
He wants to reformat the HDD, can anyone help. He's running Windows ME.

try either safe mode or system restore either might help.

How much ram does he have? and have u tried turning desktop off,and other apps then running virus scan,or an online scan even.

Safe mode and system restore don't help.
The computer has 512 MB RAM.

run msconfig and try selective start up to see what's causing it.

click here for a small free virus cleaning tool, it will probably be worth running this before trying to load the full AV package.

Sounds as if one of his files has managed to turn itself into a loop. IE has always been the sinner in my experience. Check size of IE files via properties and if one keeps going up to beyond HD size that's the crim. Time to do big backup unless the PCA pundits can produce a solution.

Alternatively do a scandisc and watch for where it sticks.
