Ports !

  curlylad 00:06 11 Oct 2003

A warning window keeps telling me that Spamweed engine failed to start because another program is using port 110. It then asks me if I want to change the port used by Spamweed.
I know nothing about ports , what they do , or how many I have , bearing all this in mind I know I have to change the port that Spamweed uses but what port do I change it to ?

It sounds as though you n3eed a decent firewall so that you can control what goes in and out of your computer. I would suggest ZoneAlarm, the free version is adequate for most users and will tell you what programs are trying to access the internet. I have never heard of Spamweed and have no problems with spam as my ISP blocks it.

Did you part with cash for this program?

Port 110 is used by POP3 e-mail programs like Outlook and outlook Express. So it is pretty obvious that SpamWeed won't be able to use that port at the same time.

You could try Port 111 (you have thousands, up to 65 thousand and a few more). A better bet, in my opinion, is to ditch Spamwweed and get Mailwasher click here

Tanx , but I have adequate Firewall.
Tanx for the useful links.
I have been using my Spamweed for yonks whilst running O.E. , and ne'er a problem before , and I also have Mailwasher(never can be too careful), I think what the problem may be is that perhaps I'm using too many Programs that use by default the same port , could this be the case , and if so would it be a problem to do what you suggested VoG, and just use port 111?
