pop ups - help

  pollpott 11:00 18 Nov 2004

I have recently started using a new computer with XP and straight away found that I was getting pop ups which I never got before using ME. One which occurs most frequently is from 'Messenger service 'which tells me that "...buffer overflow in messenger srvice could allow code execution ..." it goes on to say that I need a patch from the site click here .Is this genuine. Also, I have been advised to instal the SP2 for XP does this help with these problems?

yes i would say install sp2 but i would do a restore point before you proceed with it

And do not get the patch suggested.

Hi, do DON't need to install serice pack 2 to solve this problem, however it is easier cause windows automatically disables this....
Please go to Control Panel->Performance and Maintenence->Administrative tools->Services.....

When you have found this, you now have to find "Messenger" in the list on the right. Double click onto it and click onto Disabled for the startup type and then click onto Stop and apply it. And there it is you WONT get this problem again....

Or just run Shoot the Messenger click here
