Play DVDs on Windows Media Player

  Trikie 09:47 10 Feb 2005

My version of WMP does not play DVDs. When I insert one it suggests I configure it to do so. Going to the web help it seems I need to know what version of WMP I have. How do I find this?

Perhaps someone could also help with the reconfiguration (assuming its not a "go to the registry" task).

Hi Trikie. I don't think WMP supports playing DVD's. You will need something like WinDVD or PowerDVD [there are others]. Both are available for free download trial for a month or so, try here click here

Open WMP and select Help from the menu bar then "About Windows Media Player"

Look down the list for DVD plugins. (I think this page is for WMP version 10. It's worth upgrading to it if you can)

Thanks both. The only info on the Help tab is a nunber 8.00.004487 and another that looks like a registration number.

Does the 8 mean Version 8? I've had XP for 3 years and its just been loaded into a replacement PC with SP1 but not SP2 (yet)

Yes it looks like you have version 8. SP2 automatically loaded version 10 if I remember rightly and I would recommend SP2 anyway. Here`s a link to the WMP10 download site click here

I`m pretty sure you can download WM10 alone without SP2 but someone will correct me if I`m wrong!

Thanks Taff36 - I now have Version 10.

I regularly play DVDs with Windows Media Player - you need to enable DVD in File Types and have a hardware or software DVD decoder installed such as PowerDVD.

A list of some of the decoders available can be found in XP Help and Support - key DVD into the search box.
