I have a hard drive on my computer C drive..which is nearly full, and the Data D drive which is nearly empty. Can I install the pinnacle software on my D drive and can I use this drive to edit videos ? if not can I put the software on an external drive and use this drive for downloading and editing ?

You can install Pinnacle to any drive and use it to edit. For speed it is better that all drives/partitions used are integral with your PC as access to an external HDD would be slower and may result in errors due to cables being subjected to other magnetic influences.

Transferring AVIs to an external HDD for storage is fine, though it may take some time depending on the PC and HDD concerned.
