Pine ESS Modem Driver Problems.

  leedaz 11:33 30 Sep 2005

I have an old (P3 450) system which I want to give to a friend. The last time I started it 2 months ago all was well.This time I get 'found new hardware' PCI simple comms. controller. I have had the modem working before and also have the correct drivers on disk but it won't work now and refuses to accept the drivers. I do get the drivers to install in 'add new hardware' but when I query the modem or try to connect I get BSOD. Any ideas...? TIA.

Will post BSOD message soon.

If you can not get it going from Eric10's link, you could try;

Going to device manager and remove the entry for modem or simple PCI controller. Shut the computer down and then switch the modem to a different PCI slot.

Restart the machine and install the modem drivers. This sometimes gets them going.

Thanks Dan11 but have already tried that one. Just tried Erics suggestion and got same message..Windows unable to locate driver for this device. The file is called mdmess.inf and is definitely the correct one.The documentation that came with modem suggests using win 2000 built in driver which also doesn't work.

When I try the 'upgrade device driver wizard' in windows.. ESS has 3 entries in manufacturers columb but each entry only lists my modem. ie.. ESS ES56T PI Data fax voice modem. The documentation tells me to find data fax modem (not voice) but this isn't in list. (although i'm sure it has been in the list in the past..also why 3 entries in manufacturers list when in past i'm sure there was only one..)

Any idea how I can completely remove all evidence of this modem and start from scratch..? (physically remove hardware ..start up...remove evidence of ESS modem and start again) Does the registry keep info on modems (or any other hidden location in windows) ?

Try this driver click here. It is zipped, so you will have to unzip it in a folder on the desktop. it is supposed to be for the data fax modem?

make sure you delete the entry for the modem in device manager, reboot and then point windows to that folder.

Thanks Dan11 will give it a whirl tho' it looks like a win98 file...I'm 2k pro... but the worst case scenario is only another coffee coaster!!
