Phoning 'Home'

I am finding more and more of my installed programs are seeking to contact 'base' whenever I start them up. Sygate firewall alerts me to this but I invariably have given permission to allow these 'contacts', purely on the basis that since I am running the programmes then 'what the hell' but now I am not so sure .
Should these programmes be allowed to contact the 'mother-ship' as and when they like or should I block all attempts on the basis of better security.
Would there be any repercussions to blocking them .

They are probably checking for new versions. Personally I would let them get on with it especially your AV, firewall and spyware progs.....for instance Ccleaner 'calls home' everytime that you run it and that is no bad thing.
