Permission to view files on another HD

I have the HDD from my mother in law's old PC. The PC was scrapped a couple of years ago, but she kept the HDD "just in case". Well, "just in case" has happened and I need to retrieve a number of files, particularly photos. I've put the drive in a caddy and connected it to my PC. I can see the various folders and files in Windows Explorer, but can't open them. I keep coming up against "You don't currently have permission to view this folder/file".

Any help as to how to proceed would be much appreciated.

Dunno what happened there.

It was meant to read: "Thanks for taking the trouble to help out."
