PCI Slots

I haven't opened up my PC yet, but just as a preliminary thought, do computers usually come with a spare PCI slot? Bear in mind it was bought around 2000.

Usually, yes. Have a look at the back for "blanking" plates - these would indicate spare slots behind them.

Depending on make of Motherboard usually between 3 and 5 PCI slots sometimes more.

Modem, Sound card, TV card, USB cards, to name but a few fit in these slots.

Although sound and modem nowadays often come on the Mobo leaving slots spare.

I've had a look around the back of the PC, and there are 2 'blanking' plates. I would've thought they would be together, but my sound card is in between the 2...go figure :)

Do you know the make of the mother board? You could well have an AGP slot along with the PCI slots.

They are not together because it is best to keep as much space as possible between them for cooling purposes.
