i just shutdown my pc unpluged a cd drive and boot and it won't do anything it checks the system but does not got passed the system check when computer starts i also recently installed windows xp professional upgrade from 98se i tried plugging the cd drive back in but that does not help i changed them to masters and slaves and the otherway round but till it does not go any further than the bit at the beggining

Are the lights on the case on bootup normal colour? (as they were before)

it sounds as if you will need to go into the BIOS and disable CD-ROM

Will it boot up from a floppy startup disc ?

Following on from madboy's suggestion, you could go into the bios and change all four eide channels to AUTO so that your PC will look for all the drives that are connected.

Is it set to do a first boot from CD?

your computer, it may be well to check all connections to make sure you have not inadvertantly disconnected something.
