PC will not Boot

  oakwood 19:42 10 Dec 2006

Hi all

When I turn on the PC after a complete power down, it will not post.

If I turn off the power, remove the RAM stick and replace it , it boots OK.

If I restart using "Start", "Turn off the Computer", "Restart". it is OK.

However after a complete power down it again refuses to post.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Try with another PSU if you have or can borrow one.

As per Fruit Bat /\0/\ and

Run the memtest click here this may take some time.

Make sure the ram is firmly seated and clipped into place, just be careful how hard you press on the mobo.

Have you tried just one stick of ram if using more than one, also try different slots.

Thanks for your replies
The PC is at my Mother in Laws.
I am unable to get there at the moment. (being a full moon and all that).
But will try over the next couple of days and let you know how I got on.

Do you get any beeps when the PC fails to boot? It could be faulty RAM as when you restart, the RAM doesn't lose power. When you power the whole machine off the power is cut so it's probably having a problem initialising the RAM. If you get one long beep, that's likely to be a RAM problem and you should try another stick of RAM to see if that helps.

No beeps are heard when the PC boots.

Sorted now.

One of 2 things fixed it.
Reseated power cable on motherboard & moved memory to 2nd slot.
As it is working OK, don't want to test any more.

Thanks for the help
