pc starts on its own

when telephone rings ,pc starts up on its own.also starts up at any time of day or night.no scheduled tasks are set .

Easiest way to solve this is to "un-plug" it when it is off or buy one of those plug sokets that has a power on/off switch....

Check your motherboard manual and check for a setting called wake on modem in the bios disable it.

could be a hacker/attack trying to use the wake on lan facility to get onto your pc.

or wake on token ring (modem, as suggested above)

either way it is possible to turn them both off via the bios.

do you use the pc as a fax terminal, if so thats another avenue to check out.
