PC sometimes won't boot

After a recent system crash when I was playing a CD, I've had problems starting my PC. For a while I couldn't get it to start at all.
However, since pulling out/swapping some of the Memory cards, it has been a mixed bag. Sometimes the fans whirl and nothing else happens. Sometimes it bleeps fairly soon after switching on and it boots up as normal.
When it does boot up it's ok and CD's also play ok. Any ideas please?
