every time I run Norton Antivirus scan, my pc runs very slowly and often freezes in which case i have no option but to swith off the computer manually.

why does this happen and anything I can do to improve?

Virus scanning is a very intensive operation on a PC.

What happens if you just let the PC run the scan without doing anything else?

It runs ok, no problem.

Re-schedule your Virus Scan, it's more important than most anything else you're doing.

Have to agree with the others madaboutplants I don't attempt to use my PC when its running a scan. If the time its running is inconvenient for me I just cancel it and run it later. I don't try to use it when its scanning.

Don't forget that during a scan the AV is not only scanning the disk but what you are doing at the same time. You are simply over working the PC.

Some Av can have their priority dropped but i would just run when you are not using the PC.
