PC Shutting Down & Restarting

  maz2 21:37 01 Jan 2006

I recently bought a new printer which has a card reader on it whuch shows up as a separate drive, it is connected via usb, sometimes when I switch it on the PC shuts down and restarts, this also happens with an external hard drive I have, I plug it into usb and shuts down and restarts, this only happens sometimes. I'm running XP2

Maybe one of them is taking too much power? are there any USB devices plugged in other than these two? and you say it only happens sometimes...is it like a certain time during the day or just anytime?

Just anytime, I have 2 printers connected on usb, one is ok, it seems to be only those that are recognised as a drive, maybe I need an upgrade

..might be worth trying a powered USB hub...you can pick them up quite cheaply now and will probably give you more USB ports than you have - they have their own power so won't draw power from your machine.

I never thought of that, I've got one on the pc upstairs that I don't think is in use. Thanks very much
