I have a desktop that shuts itself off after the initial single beep. If I leave it, then 20/30 seconds later it restarts automatically but then switches off after the intial beep. The processor fan is spinning OK. I've tried changing the graphics card, the RAM and the PSU but get the same problem. I've removed all but the graphics card from the PCI slots. What could be wrong?
Has this only just started happening, was it all working ok previously? What OS and other peripherals? With the limited information, it could be either duff CPU or motherboard problem.
No, it's been there a while and used to switch off irregularly, i.e. it worked for a few hours before switching itself off but I could wait a few minutes before turning it back on again. Now the problem appears to be more permanent.
Hmm, sounds like the CPU has died probably due to over-heating in the past, which has not been recognised and sorted.
OK - thanks for that.
If you decide to replace the CPU yourself, don't forget the Thermal Paste!Good luck.
It sounds as if the cpu is damaged.Take off the fan and heatsink and check if has any paste on the chip. See if it shows any sign of damage, clean it and add new paste and try.
CPU overheating, check the fan and heatsink not blocked
