I use:
Firewall : PCTools
Anti Virus: Avira - some prefer Avast or MS Security Essentials (Only install one anti virus)
Malware blocker: Spywareblaster
Ani Malware: Superantispyware and Malawarebytes
All Free.
CCleaner as a clean up tool and light registry cleaner.
Some say AVG clashes with some firewalls such as Zone Alarm. I used to have AVG but since version 8.5 , switched to another.

You need a firewall
one antivirus program
and as much antispyware as you wish

What ops system?

If W7 or Vista then
windows own firewall
MSE click here as your antivirus and antispyware with malwarebytes click here as a backup scanner and spywareblaster click here as a blocker

If XP then
Zonealarm firewall click here
Avast click here
malwarebytes click here as a backup scanner and spywareblaster click here as a blocker
