PC powers off when I connect to internet. thought it might have been CPU overheating so have replaced fan. still doing it! have scanned for virus but not found anything. PC was built about a year ago and I reused a modem from a different pc, would that cause the problem?

Any help gratefully received

You have a setting in one of your programs set to 'Disconnect from the internet when (Download -Scan - Action) has completed.
You need to check frequently used programs (or possibly dial up settings) for a check box which indicates this behaviour.

Ahhh, Sorry somehoew I read 'Disconnect from' the internet.
The only thing I can think of then (After kicking myself) is the Blaster Worm. This is a classic sympton.
How good is your malware protection?
