pc in need of a few upgrades

  You Lose 19:37 21 Dec 2011

Hey all :)

Ive been looking around the net to find a better CPU & GPU for this old computer; im willing to spend £200 maybe £250 tops on upgrading it. its not going to be used for high "high" performance gaming or anything like that, games will be played/HD videos if anything.. ive been on many sites; I have a fair clue what to look for - but im not sure if the parts will go with the motherboard or like its the wrong DDR2/3 or whatever!

These are my current specs.

(OS is windows7) -

CPU : AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2GHZ(socket AM3(940) http://reviews.cnet.com/processors/amd-athlon-64-x2/4507-3086_7-31515127.html?tag=mncol;subnav

GPU : Nvidia Gefirce 7300GS 256mb http://www.nvidia.co.uk/page/geforce_7300.html

Motherboard : ASUS M2NPV-VM http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NPVVM/#CPUS

PSU : 400w not sure what the brand is, Though i will upgrade later on

RAM : Four 1GB kington DDR2

ive found a few GPUS that look fairly good - for price and performance, i have no idea if they'd be any good/any better ones out there. Though id like to keep nvadia if possible. this 1 : http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0021AFO4Y/ref=nosim/7240466-rg2304-00-20?s=merchant

I heard 8800GT is pretty damn good, But i can only find DDR3. im sure there is DDR2 as the guy who told me about it said there was DDDR2/DDR3 but idk:/

I have no idea where to start with the CPU. even if i bought that GPU (9500gt) would the current CPU (althon X2 3800+) bottleneck my pc?

Thanks for all your help to anyone who replies :D

It does not matter if the graphics memory is different from the motherboard memory, so you do not have to hunt for a card with DDR2 memory, just buy one that is in the price range and spec that you need. Just make sure it is PCIe and not AGP. You can compare Graphics cards here, just click on the area that interest you.

And you can search sites such as this one for the best AMD processors using your Asus website to make sure that they will work with your board.

Ah thank you for the links, and wow i always thought it had to be the same as the motherboard RAM, thanks again :)
