PC goes to sleep when I press ctrl

  juliabuckley 17:26 12 Nov 2008

Sometimes, but not always, when I press the control key on my keyboard my computer goes into hibernate mode. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?

It keeps happening when I'm copy-pasting and it's really annoying!

Thanks in advance.

Thanks rawprawn, I followed the link and pressed shift x5 like it said, but I didn't have sticky keys switched on.

When did it start? is system restore an option?

I think it's always done it, I haven't had the computer long.

Actually it's a laptop, but I usually use an external keyboard - don't know if that could be factor...?

Sometimes it happens when I do 'find' ctrl+f as well.

Try a system file scan, go to Start> Run. type sfc /scannow and hit Enter (note the space between sfc and /) you will need your XP CD (assuming XP) If vista Open the command prompt using right click and Run as Administrator and at the prompt type sfc /scannow and the hit Enter

Also look in Control Panel Power Options and see what it says about Hibernating, try using no hibernation.
