Just spoken to HP support they say if I use a windows xp cd I will have to reformat hard drive completely. Is this true if so will I loose all data?

No you should be able to do a repair click here

The cd rom drive will not open that is presumably not because of the crash. I have taken the back of the case but how do i get drive to open???

There should be a small hole on the front of the drive. If you uncurl a paper clip and insert it gently but firmly the drive should open.
