PC failed post, kept re-booting

  Graham. 23:15 23 Mar 2009

This happened over the weekend. It got as far as hard drive and memory check, then re-booted and started again. I couldn't get to Safe Mode, no response to F8.

Suspecting a CPU over-heat problem, I took the side off expecting to see cat fur - there's a lot floating about here. But everything clean, all fans running. Memory seated OK.

Then I re-started, everything back to normal. What could it have been?

if it happens again then I would start checking one component at a time. I would clean out as much dust and cat hair as possible, also check the rear psu grill is not blocked. You don't mention anything about your machine by make, brand of windows.

Thanks. The machine is 4 months old, Zoostorm, Vista Home Premium.

I wouldn't want to wait until it happened again.

I can't offer you any answers but if it was mine I would want to do a full investigation and in the meantime keep everything backed up daily.

Two things though:

Did it allow you to get into the BIOS?

You could just check the cpu heatsink is firmly fixed down on all four corners.

Yes, I could get into the BIOS. It is very clean inside, and nothing is loose.
