Patch Network Error-system will reboot

Last week the above msg appeared and afterwards when I tried to connect to the Internet I got an error message to do with ADS module, and it would not connect through clicking the desktop icon.
I did manage to connect by rightclicking in Network Connections. When I checked the connections page, the 'always dial my default' box was no longer selected, but 'never dial' was. When I changed this I could then connect via desktop icon.
After hearing about rogue diallers,I was terrified that somehow this was the reason why the original error msg had appeared. Have taken overkill measures against this - have applied for Broadband, barred premium numbers, unplugged connection when not in use and downloaded Spybot, Adaware and Antidialler. Per Antidialler I think I'm safe(for now)
What did happen originally - why did I get the Patch Network Error msg?
