password a laptop

i would like to password my laptop in the bios as soon as it starts to boot up, i have tried to do this in the bios but it wont hold the password, in the bios the password says "unregisterd" i can put one in but it wil not work on boot up, any ideas please.

unsure about bios manufacturer, laptop is a "toshiba satellite 4060 xcdt"

Within the control panel of many Toshiba laptops is the option to set a BIOS password. Take a look there.

I agree - There`s a "Toshiba HW Setup" on mine and the option on the password tab is "Not Registered" or "Registered"

have upgraded from 98 to xp and there is nothing in control panal must have got wiped when reformated. bios is Eprom 512kb 8-bit

According to click here there is no compatible BIOS update for XP, only W98 the latest being dated 16/05/02, so going through the Hardware Control Panel will not be an option. Perhaps someone can supply a link to a third party application.
