Partitioning a second Hard Drive in XP

  [DELETED] 22:30 09 Oct 2003

I have installed a 80GB HD as a Slave and using XP Pro's Disc Management I wish to partition it as 40GB/40GB.

I have got as far as the drive being recognised as "Disc 1" and 80GB in disk manager. When I right click on this drive I am invited to create a partition between 8MB and 17MB [I am looking for 40GB]. The drive is not formatted yet! Am I missing something? What do I do now?

Were you given the option to intilise the disk? ...and did you?

Was this a used disk from another computer?

When you right click to the left of disk 1 what options are given?

I believe there was something about initialising and to create a partition. I will check this out again and post the info back in a few minutes.

The disk is a new OEM and it was recognised in the bios and XP Disk Manager but not of course in Explorer.

It will not be recognised in explorer until you Format it.

However was it initialized ?

Sorry for the delay, it took me ages to find the device manager again.

I have not found an initialise option.

Right clicking give me :-

New Patition - Properties - Help

New Partition Wizard/

Choose Primary or Extended /

Specifiy partition size between max and min

Max = 78MB
Min = 8MB

I did not go any further than that.

Where it says disk 1, underneath there is should give you the size of the hard drive.

It will not be 80GB it will be somethng like 75.6 or close to that. Do you see this and what figure does it show?

Also do you see an ONLINE state for the hard drive near the size of the HDD.

Also next to disk 1 on the right you should see a long black rectangle running from left to right do you see this?
