Partition Magic versus WinXP disk management

  The Sheep 15:02 01 Nov 2005

Hello all.

I am going to be partitioning a 200G HD and was advised by a friend to use Partition Magic. Having looked through the posts on this site regarding this it has become apparent to me that WinXP can actually do this. Can anyone explain to me what the pros and cons of using PM are......would it not be easier to just do this through XP?

Thanks people.

For basic disk partitioning Windows XP will do the job.

For merging partitions and resizing without loosing data PM will do the job.

OK cheers.

The 200G HD in question is almost empty and on a brand new PC. Would it be safe to carry out the initial partitioning with the WinXP disk management tool and use PM if any resizing etc had to be done in the future?

Thanks for the response?

Yeah,XP is fine for blank HD's,PM is brill for merging/resizing,etc without data loss.

If Windows is already installed on the disk then PM would have to be used.

"For merging partitions and resizing without loosing data PM will do the job."

If the disk was a second hard drive that had just been added then you could use Windows XP to do it. If the disk has data on it and you need to move, resize or merge partitions you need PM.

So no. Use PM in this case.

Backup, backup and backup before you use PM.
