I am installing a160GB HDD as a slave to my 120 master.

I have never partitioned before and am wondering if it is really necessary.

If it is, are there any good freebies around to help with it?

I have never partitioned before and am wondering if it is really necessary. - It allows you to split your files...

Less defrag time for each partition.

If it is, are there any good freebies around to help with it? - Using XP?

Start, Run, Type:

diskmgmt.msc

Click OK.

The drive will be "Disk 1" Right click the black line, New partition and follow the wizard.

Make sure your BIOS and operating system support the 160GB hdd first.

If you use XP, you can use Disk Management to partition it.

If you use 98/Me, open a command prompt window, and use fdisk.

If it is a Maxtor Hdd they have a utility that formats and partions in seconds.

Thank you all.

Magazines keep offering free partitioning programmes and before XP you could do it in DOS.

It never occured to me that XP would do it.

Like R4 said, Maxtor's own programme is excellent and very easy. It's called Maxblast and can be downloaded free click here
