overwriting pirate copy of XP pro

Is it possible to overwrite a pirated copy of windows xp pro with a legitimate version, without losing data?

You may not need to install the 'legit' version. Try using Windows License Key changer to have the purchased one entered.

During the setup process I got a message saying 'set up is restarting' when set up reaches the same point it does the same again ad infinitum (I think).
I booted with my second hard drive and can't access my own documents (on the original drive), the other two users can get theirs but when I click on mine I get a message saying 'access denied' can anyone help with this before I reformat?
