Outlook Express "illegal Operation"

  Topo 10:55 15 Feb 2004

I am running Windows 98 Outlook Express 6 .
Every time I try to open an email I get a message which says."MSIM This programme has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down .If the problem persists contact the programme vendor"
This is sometimes followed by another message which says " Kernel 32 caused an invalid page fault in Module unknown>at 0084:4ba53e.I have also received a similar message which said "Secur32......."
I am running up to date virus checkers etc.and they have revealed nothing untoward but I think the problem stems from when I foolishly tried to open a doddgy attachment that I thought was from someone that I knew.
Has anyone any ideas on what I can do to rectify the problem?
