Outlook Express Identity & Slow Computer

On return from holiday my Dell Inspiron 5000 running Win98 and latest version Outlook Express suddenly seized up in mid-use and everytime attempted to reboot and open Outlook Ex, it just turned to hour glass and not responding. This appeared to be a problem with the identity it was using which was corrupted - i deleted it using regedit, as instructed on MS website, and then tried to re-install the identity which was saved on the desktop but this failed. I started with a new ID and then imported my mail across, but the computer is still much slower than before - I have the latest versions of AVG and Ad-Aware installed and run recently. Any help much appreciated
