Outlook Express Fails to find mailboxes on start

Recently I have had trouble with Outlook Express. If I start my session by logging on through Outlook it will not find any of my e-mail boxes. If I switch to Explorer on the same connection it will not find any web sites. However, if I start with Explorer both explorer and then Outlook work O.K. Having used Outlook I can then return to explorer and all is still well. I do not understand this strange behaviour
