Outlook 2010 Contacts Notes capacity

I use Windows 8.1 after updating some while ago from Windows 8. My contacts are important and after any phone or email contact I record key info within "Notes". A perfect electronic card index system which also syncs via Hotmail connector with my windows phone 8.1. I always knew there was a limit to how much data I could key into "Notes", possibly 1000 characters & maybe some other space limits. I used to get a message when the note was full and I would set up a "duplicate" contact record with Name-overflow. However, I don't get any message when I've reached my limit and I type away and save it. Then say 2 months later part of what I've typed hasn't been saved. Has the limit been changed? Is it a 8.1 problem? Can anyone help or suggest I way over overcoming my problem, please?
