OpenOffice, Java and Windows Me

On the cover disk of Tips and Tricks Jan/Feb 2004 is OpenOffice. I thought that I would try it having read good reports. I get to a stage in the installation where it looks for a Java environment and can't find one. I do not appear to be given the chance to install anything at this point, just cancel or browse which takes me to a temp directory. What should my next step be to install OpenOffice to work fully? Java console(??) is not enabled in Internet Explorer.

Having downloaded java virtual machine last night all seemed well before I retired. This morning I have installed OpenOffice with no hitches and everything appears in working order. Many thanks for your help madboy33©®.
