opening files in excel

  anjay 09:56 05 Feb 2006

In Windows XP prof I have OFFICE 02
McAffee anti-virus and Spyware doctor
Various word files and excel files together with graphics under Serif and Photo Shop
After a session of normal use, quite suddenly I am met with message
Cannot open file.
After clicking twice on this message, the file opens and behaves normally.
Sometimes there is a further message :
There are macros on this file: Disable or allow ??
On either action the file opens normally.
The complete computer files have been scanned by both Macaffee an by Spydoctor (both upgraded) and no viruses etc have shown up

Both Office and Windows have been re-installed t no effect.
Is the anything I can do other than removing Office and Windows and re-formatting ?

Two things come to mind, the first being security, Tools>Macros>Security. From here you can set the security level - yous sounds as if it`s on Medum because it`s asking you to decide whether to open files with macros, no necessarily a bad thing though.

Secondly try a repair of Excel. Help>Detect & Repair - you may be asked for your installation disk for Ofice 2002.

Regret to say all these have been well & truly tried with no joy
Will I have to re-format all ??

I would play about witht the settings some more yet. You`ve already tried fresh installs of both Windows and Office so doing it again won`t help. Which Service Pack are you using on Windows?
