Opening an e-mail attachment in XP

I have WinXP Home and OE6.My granddaughter sent me an e-mail with an attachment containing info about some homework she needed help with.I opened the message OK but when trying to open the attachmentin the usual way got the message `This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action.Create an association in the Folders Options control panel.` How do I do this please?

what the file extension is? E.g. .doc = a word document?

DO you know what it is she sent you e.g. a picture, a word document etc.?

This information will be important. You can then perform the association.

I installed Power Point Viewer 2003 and opened the attachment via this program.Thanks to you both for your interest.

It was a guess based on the error message. The click here that I posted contains info on fixing the error for other file types. I didn't suspect that he didn't have the necessary software.
