Onscreen message " The current input timing is etc

Just recently and after some updates I get this intermittent message. " The current input tiiming is not supported by the monitor display. Please change your input timing to 1920 x 1200 @50ghz or any other monitor listing as per the monitor specifications."

The monitir is a dell ultrasharp, about 4 years old, pc is a dell xps 8700, also 4 years old, with win 8.1 and graphics card is an AMD radeon r9 200 series. The only fix is to power off pc ie a hard reset but then you get messages like chrome was not shut down etc. I did a google and loads of replies but no proper fix. I changed monitor and it says no signal from PC. I know its not monitor, I updated video graphic drivers. Still error occurs.

Any good fix for this and can I say its the video card for definite?

It can work for days and then go off, a right pain.
