with regard to wireless network setup is this business of being unable to get an IP address from the router's DHCP server when WEP is enabled. I've had clients tell me they contemplated blasting their laptop with a shotgun after hours of fruitlessly trying to get access to a wireless router that has a WEP key enabled.
Almost always when the WEP security is disabled the router duly does its stuff and shares the connection effortlessly. I agree with ade.h that WPA is preferable to WEP anyway, but that doesn't always solve the connection problem. In many cases people simply give up in frustration and run their routers totally unsecured.
