After installing some software and after the restart bit, the whole 'thing' has just died on me. I am unable to open any applications including IE.
This is the error message:

Error Starting Program
The OLEAUT32.DLL file cannot start.
Check the file to determine the problem.

I've tried do a system restore in 'safe mode' and nothing.

Your help will be very much appreciated.

Start in Safe Mode

Navigate to C:\Windows\System32

Rename oleaut32.dll to oleaut32.old

Restart (into Normal Mode}

No luck, I get the following:

Explorer has caused an error in
Explorer will now close.
If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.

I have tried several times.

Keep trying!

Try Start > Run > sfc/ scannow

sfc /scannow

I've tried that and I get another message:

'Windows cannot find 'sfc/scannow'. You may have typed the name incorrectly in the Run dialog, or another open program cannot find a system file.

I think I will invest in a slegehammer.

It's sfc /scannow not sfc/scannow. Note the spaces.

No, still the same message with the space in it!
