I have just bought a pc for £25 from a friend at work who payed £1200 for it 6 yrs ago.It had win98 on it, a UPS , epson printer(working) , k/b , no mouse , 15" monitor , speakers .I was expecting (hoping) for a pII 450 - pIII 633 mHz but got a pentium 166 mHz(MMx) instead. I have formatted the 2.5Gb hdd and tried to put win98 back on it but it freezes on the win98 screen after the last restart (after installing device drivers etc) and the floppy activity light is still on ( no discs left in thier drives).I presume the 'floppy seek on boot' is stopping progress but what do i do? c y l8r

The floppy seek will not effect Win98 booting. Are you installing 98 with the UPS plugged in? If so unplug it and anything else and try again.

TTP, instead of putting SMARTS into your browser try S.M.A.R.T.S, my apologies.

Remove all PCI cards exept Graphics card and all externall's as Printer etc also check the CPU fan is spining as it should. then try loading 98 if it goes fit items one at a time and the drivers

The flpppy light on all the time can indicate the (floppy) ribbon cable is the wrong way around. Depending how your BIOS is set it can stop the pc booting.

TTP sorry about my last input, it was meant for another post and age caught up with me and obviously left me confused. Shoulda gone to bed!

Freezing at this point suggests a corrupt driver.

Can you boot to safe mode (F8)?

Remove drivers and re install each individually.
