Old Computer Hard Disk

  brambles 20:39 16 Dec 2011

I am having to purchase a new computer and whilst I have all my important files backed up there are odd items all over the place.

Is it possible to use the old hard drive, with Vista, as an external drive thus retaining everything on it. I thought I had seen a piece of equipment to click the drive in.

Any ideas recommendations appreciated

Yes (but you will not be able to boot vista from that drive)

see here

get a case suitable for your type of drive i.e. IDE drive or sata drive (some cases will take both) nd for the size 3.5 inch for a deaktop drive 2.5 inch for an old laptop drive.

Thank you for your kind response. I merely thought of the old computer disk as a means of accessing and transferring old files. I am not looking for a supplementary computer running on Vista.

Would this be possible

Yes that is possible. Just put old HDD in the case and then it becomes a usb External storage Harddrive when you plug it in. Windows will assign it a new Drive Letter pertinent to the usb port you use (the HDD will no longer be your Vista C: bootable Op Sys. It will be a mass storage device and you will be able to browse to your Documents Data to do as you want with)

Once you have transferred the files you need then you can format the old drive and use it for external storage or back ups.

Re-reading brambles post "Would this be possible" and my reply of "Yes that is possible" I feel I may have misunderstood what was referred to, so if you meant boot into the old Vista on HDD then my answer should have been: No, not possible to boot into Vista via this method (as per Fruit Bat /\0/\ already said).

As previously stated it will depend on if it be Sata or IDE or 3.5 inch for desktop and 2.5 inch for laptop drives Enclosures
