So what is the solution to this problem?

I actaully took the drive out installed it in another PC, installed Win XP on it and then shoved it backm in my Deskpro, it worked perfectly.

But you say you never reformated your drive?

The microsoft knowledge base article talks about upgrading to windows xp from windows 95 or 98, but I did not upgrade I bought the computer as windows xp. So what is the solution to this. Shall i just recover the whole system? But this would mean that I would lose all my current information.

Do you have a Windows XP disk or just a recovery disk?

Do System Restore, this actually tells you that you will not loose any of your documents, it only restores system files.
