Not sure how to use the forum?

I'm seeing a considerable increase in the number of emails from new forum users who aren't too sure about how it all works - how to post threads, what's acceptable forum etiquette, etc.

Quite naturally, many people are a little reticent about asking such questions in public, so they email me. I like to respond to every request, but sometimes it takes a while - my inbox overflows every day - so.......... I've written a beginner's guide to using the forum, including hints and tips on posting, and how to get the best out of it all. Over Christmas I'll be happy to email a copy to anyone who wants one - all you have to do is click on the little envelope next to my name in this thread, or use the 'Contact the Forum Editor' link in the blue panel at the top left-hand corner of the forum pages.

You don't need to send me a long message - just say "send forum guide", and one will be with you within a day or so. I'll use the email address that you send from unless you specify a different one in your request.

That's it - Please don't use this thread to make requests, or for any other purpose other than to refresh it to keep it near the top of the page for a few days.

in under twenty minutes. Your guides will be with you soon.

why can it not be put at the top of the first page permanently(sticky) so when users log in the see it.

has been asked before i know.

32 requests. The guide will go out in one or more big mailings, so nothing will happen for a day or so.

The guide contains plenty of information about what to do and what not to do - and it's already written. We're deliberately not putting it on top of any pages - it's available on request as I said.

what if they dont know how to ask for it?

  powerless 00:12 22 Dec 2003

Automatically sent within the email or as an attachment when they register.

but my ability to say the same thing over and over again isn't quite as positive.

1. We aren't going to put anything on the site - other than what's already here.

2. We aren't going to email attachments to people when they register.

3. People will know how to ask because I've explained it in my first post - and over thirty of them have managed to do it inside an hour.

.. and again

  hugh-265156 17:15 22 Dec 2003

instead of "help!!!" say somthing like

"email problem"

"computer restarts"

"system32 error" etc.

give as much info as you can and some details of your system set up and any errors you may be getting.

help others to help you better.
